This writing support class meets on alternating (B) days. The course objective is for students to hone their skills to be able to clearly communicate their ideas in writing , so it is easy for others to read and understand. There is a focus on organization, ideas, writing vivid sentences that create mind pictures for the reader, grammar, and conventions. Targeted areas and those of ongoing classroom discussions follow:
Planning & Organization
Writing Purpose - When planning for writing, it's best to start with the end in mind. That is, determine what is being communicated, and plan from there.
Inviting Introductions - Though introductions may serve different purposes depending on the type of writing, there is a common purpose of all introductions - generate interest and keep the reader reading!
Conclusions - Like introductions, conclusions also have a common purpose, which is to provide closure to the piece of writing.
Choosing Precise Words
Choosing Precise Words brings mental images to the reader's mind. It's this visualization that gives the reader understanding, so precise words are a necessity.
Combining Sentences can help turn short choppy sentences into more effective sentences.
